Stage Collapse at Mexico Election Rally Leaves Nine Dead, Dozens Injured

A stage collapse in Mexico occurred during a candidate’s speech, injuring several members of his team, while he remained unharmed.

At least nine individuals, including a child, have tragically lost their lives, with 50 more sustaining injuries following a stage collapse at an election campaign rally in Mexico’s northern Nuevo León state, as disclosed by the local governor.

The incident unfolded as centre-left presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez delivered a speech in San Pedro Garza Garcia, near Monterrey. Despite the calamity, Maynez emerged unscathed and was observed addressing supporters afterward. However, several members of his team suffered injuries, he confirmed.

Maynez attributed the collapse to a sudden gust of wind in a post on social media platform X. Footage capturing the moment of the collapse surfaced, depicting numerous individuals on the stage as the structure gave way.

Video shared on social media platforms showcased Maynez waving to supporters before swiftly seeking refuge as the structure collapsed around him.

In response to the tragic event, State Governor Samuel Garcia urged local residents to remain indoors due to thunderstorms and powerful winds in the vicinity. “If you can, avoid going out because there are storms and atypical winds. I will keep you informed,” he stated on X.

Expressing condolences, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador extended his sympathies to the families, friends, and political supporters of the victims.

Maynez, representing the Citizens’ Movement party, currently trails in third place in national polls.
