Turkey, Canada Begin Early Talks On Free Trade Deal

Turkey and Canada agree to initiate early talks on a potential free trade agreement, joint statement says.

Turkey and Canada have agreed to initiate preliminary discussions that could pave the way for a future free trade agreement, according to a joint statement released by both governments on Tuesday.

The statement noted that Ömer Bolat, Turkey’s Minister of Trade, and Maninder Sidhu met to strengthen economic relations between Turkey and Canada, describing the partnership between both countries as increasingly strong and expanding.

Both sides agreed to begin exploratory negotiations focused on improving trade cooperation, with the aim of assessing the feasibility of a comprehensive free trade arrangement in the future.

The ministers also highlighted energy as a key area for potential collaboration. According to the statement, discussions included opportunities in renewable energy development as well as nuclear technology cooperation, with particular attention given to Canada’s CANDU reactor system as a possible option for supporting Turkey’s long-term energy diversification plans.

Officials said the talks are still at an early stage but reflect a shared interest in deepening economic and strategic ties between the two countries.
