Ademola Adeleke has been re-elected as governor of Osun State after defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Saturday’s governorship election.
Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, was declared the winner on Sunday morning following the collation of results in Osogbo, the state capital.
Joshua Ogunwole, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer for the election, said Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to emerge victorious.
Oyebamiji finished second with 444,815 votes, while Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came a distant third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won in 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11 LGAs.
The election was held amid heightened tension following reports of political violence and attacks in the days leading up to the poll.
Despite the concerns, the exercise recorded a relatively strong voter turnout, with large crowds reported at several polling units.
Voting began early across much of the state, although glitches with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) caused delays at some polling units.
While reports of election-related violence were limited on election day, there were incidents involving the harassment of journalists and disruptions to voting in some areas.
The election was also affected by reported cases of vote-buying and alleged intimidation of voters in parts of the state.
