Tinubu Congratulates Jimoh Ibrahim On Election As UN Budget Committee Chair

Tinubu hails Jimoh Ibrahim’s election to lead key UN budget committee, citing his experience in governance and finance.

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, on his election as Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee on Budget and Administration.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the President described Ibrahim’s election as significant, coming at a critical period for the United Nations as it undertakes major financial realignments and institutional reforms aimed at improving effectiveness, accountability and long-term sustainability.

Tinubu said the appointment reflected international confidence in Ibrahim’s experience in public service, diplomacy, business leadership and governance.

According to the President, the former senator’s background as a member of the Senate Committee on Budget and Appropriation and Chairman of Inter-Parliamentary Relations had equipped him for the demanding role.

“Your election to chair this important committee within weeks of official resumption at the UN validates your wealth of experience in public service, diplomacy, business leadership and governance,” Tinubu said.

The President also highlighted Ibrahim’s professional credentials in law, international taxation and business administration, noting that they had enabled him to develop a strong understanding of global governance and financial systems.

He said Ibrahim had consistently demonstrated the intellectual capacity and leadership qualities required to provide strategic direction in matters relating to fiscal management, institutional efficiency and sustainable growth.

Tinubu expressed confidence that the ambassador would justify Nigeria’s decision to appoint him as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and would make the country proud through his stewardship of the committee.

He added that Ibrahim’s experience and commitment to excellence would contribute positively to the work of the Fifth Committee and support the broader objectives of the United Nations.

The Fifth Committee is one of the most influential committees of the UN General Assembly, with responsibility for administrative and budgetary matters, including oversight of the organisation’s finances and resource allocation.

The election of Ibrahim places Nigeria in a prominent leadership position within the global body at a time of growing focus on financial reforms and institutional effectiveness.

The President wished Ibrahim success in his new role and commended the confidence reposed in him by the international community.
