South African club Mamelodi Sundowns won their second CAF Champions League title on Sunday after a 1-1 draw against FAR Rabat secured a 2-1 aggregate victory.
Sundowns entered the second leg with a 1-0 advantage but fell behind in the 40th minute when Mohamed Hrimat converted a penalty after Reda Slim was fouled by Divine Lunga.
Teboho Mokoena levelled the match just before halftime with a strike that hit the underside of the crossbar, restoring Sundowns’ aggregate lead.
FAR Rabat received another penalty in the second half after goalkeeper Ronwen Williams fouled Youssef El Fahli, but Williams saved Hrimat’s effort to preserve Sundowns’ advantage.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso said he remained confident despite his side conceding first.
“After the first penalty, I still felt that at any moment we could score,” Cardoso said. “Overall, we deserved to win.”
The victory handed Sundowns their second continental title after their 2016 triumph and came a year after losing the final to Pyramids FC. FAR Rabat last won the competition in 1985.
