Jose Mourinho has agreed terms to return to Real Madrid, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The move has been expected for some time, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said to favour Mourinho as his preferred choice.
Romano reported that personal terms have been verbally agreed, with formalities expected to be completed this week.
Mourinho has just completed an unbeaten domestic season with Benfica. The Portuguese club ended the campaign with a 3-1 win over Estoril Praia on Saturday.
Benfica won 23 matches and drew 11 across 34 league fixtures. Despite remaining unbeaten, the club finished third in the Primeira Liga standings with 80 points.
FC Porto secured the title with 88 points, while Sporting CP finished second on 82 points.
It marked a rare situation where a team completed an entire league season unbeaten but still failed to win the title.
Benfica also missed out on qualification for the Champions League and will instead compete in the Europa League next season.
Florentino Perez has reportedly not spoken directly to Mourinho, but has held discussions with Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes.
A clause in Mourinho’s two-year Benfica contract, signed eight months ago, allows him to leave for £2.6m. Mourinho is also understood to have other options available.
