Cape Verde Receive Heroes’ Welcome After Historic World Cup Run

Cape Verde receive heroes’ welcome at home after historic World Cup run captivated football fans across the globe.

Tens of thousands of jubilant supporters turned out in Cape Verde to welcome home the national football team following the country’s historic run at the World Cup.

The Blue Sharks arrived in the capital, Praia, on Sunday after their remarkable campaign came to an end with a thrilling defeat to reigning champions Argentina.

Supporters transformed the airport into a carnival atmosphere, beating drums, dancing, singing and waving national flags as they celebrated a team that had captured the imagination of football fans around the world.

Goalkeeper Vozinha, whose performances earned global recognition during the tournament, said:

“It is a very great moment for us to be here with our people.

“We wanted something bigger but we didn’t go to the next stage. Now we just enjoy the moment and celebrate with our people.”

One supporter said she attended the homecoming celebrations to thank the Blue Sharks for representing one of the smallest nations ever to compete at the World Cup and for holding their own against football powers including Spain and Uruguay.

Fans repeatedly chanted Vozinha’s name alongside that of defender Pico Lopes, while players signed shirts and posed for photographs with supporters.

The celebrations coincided with Cape Verde’s Independence Day, marking 51 years since the country gained independence from Portuguese colonial rule.

Cape Verde entered the tournament ranked 67th in the world but exceeded expectations with three group stage draws, including a goalless draw against European champions Spain in their opening match.

The Blue Sharks pushed Argentina to the limit in the knockout stage after coming from behind twice to level the match at 1-1 and later 2-2 to force extra time.

A goal from Lionel Messi had put Argentina ahead before Sidny Lopes Cabral struck to level the score for Cape Verde. A late deflected header from Cristian Romero eventually ended the fairytale run.

Cape Verde manager Pedro Leitão Brito, popularly known as Bubista, expressed pride in his side’s achievements.

“We showed that we may be a small country but we can play against the best teams in the world,” he said. “That’s a reason for pride.

“We made history for our country. They can be proud for representing our country.”
