Veteran Yoruba actor and Christian minister Taiwo Adeshina, widely known by his stage name Elegbeje Ado, has died after a brief illness, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than two decades in the Yoruba film industry.
Fellow actor Kunle Afod announced Adeshina’s death in an Instagram post on Tuesday, saying the veteran actor died on Monday after a brief illness. Afod described the late actor as one of the legends of the Yoruba film industry and paid tribute to his contributions to Yoruba cinema.
Announcing the death, Afod wrote: “We regret to announce the passing of one of the legends of the Yoruba Nollywood industry, Baba Elegbeje Ado.
“Your immense contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema, your talent, and the joy you brought to countless lives will never be forgotten.
“Thank you for the beautiful memories and the legacy you left behind. May your soul rest in perfect peace.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to your family, friends, colleagues, and fans during this difficult time.
“Rest in peace, Baba Elegbeje Ado. Your legacy lives on forever.”
Adeshina built a reputation in the Yoruba movie industry for portraying traditional rulers, village elders and other culturally significant characters. His nickname, Elegbeje Ado, originated from one of his most memorable screen roles and became the name by which he was widely recognised.
Beyond his acting career, Adeshina served as a Christian pastor while pursuing his career in the Yoruba film industry.
