This year’s UN General Assembly will be held against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic as global leaders have been asked to pre-record their speeches which will be shown in the General Assembly chamber, where each of the 193 UN member nations will be allowed to have one diplomat present.

According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, so far no country has said its leader will speak in person.

The major topic at this year’s General Debate is expected to be the coronavirus pandemic, the shortcomings and inequalities it spotlighted and how to build a post-pandemic world.
