The Lagos State Government has rejected a report claiming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was asked to resign on health grounds, saying the claim is false and misleading. It said the governor remains in office and continues to carry out his duties without any issue.
The response came from Gboyega Akosile, who spoke on behalf of the government. He said no one asked the governor to step down and there is no plan for any change in leadership. The reaction followed a report which claimed Bola Tinubu and other political figures were unhappy with the current leadership in the state.
Akosile described the report as untrue and urged the public not to believe it. He said, “This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign, this is another fake news.” He added that the governor is “in good health, of sound mind, and is actively discharging his duties as Governor of Lagos State.”
He also spoke about a meeting between the governor and his deputy, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat. According to him, the deputy visited the governor to inform him of his plan to run for the governorship. He said the meeting was peaceful and followed normal practice.
The state government said it decided to respond so residents would not be misled. It advised the public to ignore the report and rely on verified information. Governor Sanwo-Olu is expected to complete his tenure in 2027 after first taking office in 2019.
