Kano Government Issues Warning on Substandard Food, Uncovers 82 Tons of Adulterated Commodity

Kano government has warned traders against selling substandard food items, pledging tough enforcement measures on defaulters.

The Kano State Government has announced its decision to impose strict penalties on any trader found selling substandard grains or other food items in the state.

The State Commissioner of Commerce, Industries and Investment, Shehu Sagagi, issued the warning following the discovery of adulterated seeds by the Dawanau International Grains Market Association on Wednesday in Kano.

He said over 82 tons of unwholesome Sesame seeds and other food items were rejected by some international customers due to adulteration.

“The Dawanau Market plays a crucial role in the regional food supply chain, serving as a major hub for grains and other agricultural products. The market’s management is committed to ensuring that all goods sold there are safe and of high quality”

“This market, which is one of the largest in West Africa, has gone a long way in the exportation of food items. We vowed to take decisive action to protect consumers and maintain the market’s reputation for quality.” Sagagi stated.

Speaking on the issue, the President of the market Muntaka Isa revealed that the Association has set up a committee to identify and fish out the culprits for necessary sanctions and prosecution.

He said the Association has sought the assistance of the relevant government agencies such as federal ministries of Trades and Investment, Police Affairs, Health and Justice to work with the association’s Quality Control Committee at the market for necessary action.
