The Nigerian Army successfully retrieved victims kidnapped in the Bwari Area of the FCT from the Kajuru forest in Kaduna State. The operation, which took place on January 20th, was reported to have been carried out by the Army’s 197 Special Forces Battalion.

A viral video showed the dramatic moment the victims including a customs officer were freed. Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has lamented the sorry state of social media in Nigeria which he says has been dragged down to the lowest common denominator and taken over by people he described as “barbarians.” Soyinka said that in other climes, social media is still valid as means of interactions, because of the intellectual content and reasoned engagements being deployed by users but noted that here in Nigeria, the reverse is the case as those who dragged it down have swapped the intellectual quotient aspect of it.

Soyinka spoke at the 48th President’s party and his investiture as a honorary member of Abeokuta Club, in Ogun State, eliciting reactions President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Over the weekend, congratulated social media influencer and author, Reno Omokri, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, and a former Special Assistant on Digital Media to ex President Goodluck Jonathan as he marked his 50th birthday! The President, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Media Adviser, Ajuri Ngelale, commended Omokri for his dutifulness in providing constructive opinions on national issues, regardless of his political disposition.

Reno posted the congratulatory message from the president on his X account eliciting reactions.

The chairman of the presidential committee on fiscal policy and tax reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has said that federal government should begin the execution of tax reforms by March 2024. Speaking during a live television interview, Oyedele said his team is planning to involve all stakeholders in implementation including touts popularly called “Area Boys”, eliciting reactions. Over the weekend, a group of women organized a rally calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reinstate the suspended minister of humanitarian affairs, Dr Betta Edu. The women held placards with various inscriptions including, Give Betta Edu a Second Chance, Bring Back Betta Edu, Market Women Need Betta Edu.
