The UK government has announced a £65 million support package for drought-hit farmers facing severe conditions and mounting pressure on agricultural production.
Burnham said the new funding would help farmers cope with the immediate impact of the drought while strengthening preparations for future summers as Britain faces growing climate pressures.
The package will expand incentives for sustainable farming, simplify the process for farmers seeking to construct reservoirs and improve access to water supplies during periods of drought.
Burnham said protecting domestic food production was a matter of national security, arguing that farmers should not be left to bear the impact of changing weather patterns alone.
The announcement comes after England and Wales recorded their driest July on record, with prolonged dry conditions placing significant pressure on agriculture and water resources.
Britain’s cereal harvest is also expected to be the weakest since comparable records began in 1984, according to an analysis released earlier this month.
The government said the additional funding would help farmers manage the immediate effects of the drought while strengthening the agricultural sector’s resilience to future climate-related challenges.
