Tinubu Receives Benin’s New President Wadagni In Lagos

President Tinubu hosted newly-inaugurated Benin Republic President Romuald Wadagni for talks at his Lagos residence.

President Bola Tinubu on Monday received the newly inaugurated President of Benin Republic, Romuald Wadagni, at his residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Wadagni arrived in Lagos on Monday afternoon and was received at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu before proceeding to meet the Nigerian leader.

The two presidents later held a closed-door meeting that lasted about 30 minutes.

The visit comes barely a week after Wadagni was sworn in as President of Benin Republic following his victory in the country’s April 12, 2026 presidential election.

He succeeded former President Patrice Talon and officially assumed office on May 24, 2026.

President Tinubu had delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at Wadagni’s inauguration ceremony.

Benin Republic shares a border with Nigeria and remains one of the country’s key partners in regional cooperation, trade and security within West Africa.

The meeting is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries and reinforce existing cooperation on regional issues.
