Elon Musk, chief executive of SpaceX, has said he will give every child in the United States one share in the company next year.
Musk currently owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, according to an August filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). His holdings rise to 6.4 billion shares when unvested awards and stock options are included, representing a 48.4 per cent beneficial stake in the company.
Official US Census Bureau data showed that the country had approximately 72 million children under the age of 18 as of July 1, 2025.
Based on SpaceX’s closing share price of $146.03 on Friday, distributing one share to each child would amount to approximately $10.5 billion in shares.
The proposed giveaway would involve a significant portion of the company’s shares, although details of how the distribution would be implemented were not provided in the information available.
