Tinubu Nominates Joseph Tegbe As Minister Of Power

President Tinubu has nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister of Power, pending Senate confirmation, to drive ongoing sector reforms.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Nigeria’s Minister of Power, in a move aimed at deepening reforms in the electricity sector and strengthening ongoing efforts to stabilise the national grid and attract investment.

In a statement posted on Wednesday via the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the presidency said the nomination, which has been formally transmitted to the Senate, is “subject to confirmation by the Senate,” in line with constitutional requirements.

According to a State House statement signed by  Onanuga, the nomination follows the resignation of the former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who “stepped down from office to pursue elective office.”

Mr Tegbe, who hails from Oyo State, is described as a seasoned fiscal and economic reform expert with more than 35 years of professional experience across both the public and private sectors.

He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led “wide-ranging initiatives in fiscal policy reform, institutional transformation, and governance.”

During that period, he also advised government institutions and private sector organisations on “strategic reforms, regulatory frameworks, and investment structuring.”

At present, Tegbe serves as Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), a role in which he oversees efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China.

The statement noted that the NCSP also “coordinates engagements with public sector stakeholders to advance economic and social development in line with FOCAC objectives.”

His background includes notable experience in the power sector, particularly in regulatory and institutional reform processes involving agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).

The Presidency expressed confidence that his appointment, once confirmed, would further support ongoing reforms in the sector.

It stated that his nomination is expected to “strengthen further ongoing efforts to reform the power sector, enhance grid stability, and attract sustainable investment in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

President Tinubu, according to the statement, expects the minister-designate to “bring his extensive expertise to bear to advance critical reforms and deliver improved outcomes for Nigerians in the power sector,” upon confirmation by the Senate.
