President Bola Tinubu celebrates Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, marking 20 years of leadership and service to Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, on his 20th anniversary on the throne, describing him as a respected traditional ruler and advocate for religious harmony and national unity.

In a tribute issued on Monday, the President reflected on the Sultan’s two decades of leadership, highlighting his contributions to peacebuilding, religious tolerance, education and national development.

Tinubu described the monarch as a leader, friend, bridge between faiths, voice of moderation and trusted adviser to leaders across the country.

In his message, the President said, “Twenty years ago, you ascended the throne with humility, courage, and a profound sense of duty. In the two decades since, you have not only preserved the glorious heritage of the Sokoto Caliphate; you have enriched it, redefined it, and made it a formidable instrument for peace, unity, and national development.”

He also commended the Sultan’s role in promoting peaceful relations between Christians and Muslims through his leadership of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council.

Tinubu said the monarch had consistently advocated religious harmony and tolerance, adding that his interventions had helped make Nigeria’s religious diversity a source of strength.

The President also highlighted the Sultan’s advocacy for peace in northern Nigeria and the Sahel, as well as his support for education, particularly for girls, agriculture, public health and vulnerable communities.

Reflecting on their relationship, Tinubu said he valued the monarch’s friendship and described his counsel as honest and guided by the national interest.

He wrote, “Your counsel has been honest, patriotic, and always in Nigeria’s best interest. Thank you for your support and your prayers for our nation.”

The President prayed for the Sultan’s continued good health, long life and wisdom, expressing hope that his reign would continue to promote peace in Sokoto and unity across Nigeria.

He concluded his message by congratulating the monarch on the milestone.
