Sultan Of Sokoto Hails Oba Ewuare II As Role Model At Benin Monarch’s 10th Coronation Anniversary

Sultan of Sokoto Sa’ad Abubakar III praises Oba Ewuare II as a model for traditional rulers during the Benin monarch’s 10th coronation anniversary.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described the Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, as a role model to traditional rulers in Nigeria.

The Sultan made the statement over the weekend during a royal Durbar organised as part of activities marking the Benin monarch’s 10th coronation anniversary.

The Durbar has become a recurring feature since Oba Ewuare II ascended the throne of his ancestors 10 years ago.

Represented by the Emir of Kagara, Niger State, Malam Ahmed Garba Gunna, the Sultan paid tribute to Oba Ewuare, who rode on horseback from his palace to Garrick Memorial Ground to lead a massive crowd at the royal horse race.

He described the Oba as a worthy and influential leader deserving of the Durbar honour as a first-class traditional ruler.

“We are following in your footsteps while praying for grace and courage,” said the Sultan, whose delegation joined other traditional rulers – including the Imah IV of Somorika Kingdom, HRH Sule Idaiye, and the Ojie of Uneme N’ Ekehuan, HRH Oba Felix Collins, both from Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State – in paying homage.

Frank Irabor, Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, who spoke on behalf of the Benin palace, expressed deep appreciation to his guests on the occasion.

He also acknowledged the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, and a team of veterinary doctors led by the Director of the UNIBEN Veterinary Clinic, Prof. Paul Paul Nwiyi Okechukwu, who ensured the health and well-being of the horses and riders throughout their stay ahead of the Durbar event.

The colourful celebration not only highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom but also served as a powerful symbol of unity, mutual respect, and bridges built across traditional institutions throughout Nigeria.

As Oba Ewuare II marks a decade of purposeful reign, the grand Durbar stands as a testament to a legacy that continues to inspire traditional leadership nationwide
