Lawyer and public affairs analyst Ivie Omorogie says Nigeria is in a healing process, with positive macroeconomic indicators, despite the economic difficulties facing citizens.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Saturday, Omorogie said Nigerians need to understand the reforms and allow the administration time to complete its work.
“The fact remains, at the macro level, all indicators are positive.”
She said the country was recovering from the effects of previous economic challenges and that the current situation required patience.
“We have gone through the reform. We have had the surgery. But even if you have the best surgeon in the world, you’re not going to walk out of there jumping and singing.
You’re going to be in pain for some time. We know Nigeria. We’ve all lived in this country.”
Omorogie acknowledged the difficulties Nigerians were experiencing, saying the country had been through significant challenges.
“This place was a mess. When I’m advising international investors and explaining official markets and black market, oh, you go talk tire. They don’t understand it.
The fact remains that the administration now inherited something that nobody wishes to inherit. Nobody wishes to enter a job with that level. The debt portfolio was huge before Tinubu took over.”
She said the government’s economic decisions had been necessary, adding that the country would have faced greater difficulties if it had continued on its previous economic trajectory.
“But I also know that every single decision that was made needed to be done. Because if we had continued on the trajectory that we were on before, there would be no Nigeria.”
Omorogie urged Nigerians to understand the reforms and remain patient as the country works towards recovery.
So all we need is just patience. We need to give the administration time to finish what they’ve done. Because I think changing it now would be disastrous for the future of Nigeria.”
She maintained that Nigerians needed to understand the reasons behind the reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market.
“But because I understand why this is happening, I understand that fuel subsidy had to go. I understand that the forex market had to be unified. I understand that the tax and revenue had to be done.
So I’m able to bear through the process. I understand that we are in a healing process right now. And in the next few years, things will be better.
By the grace of God. Right? But we all have to be patient. And we all have to understand that we have our own individual parts to play.”
