Sony dominated the North American box office over the weekend, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day retaining the top spot and Insidious: Out of the Further opening in second place.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an estimated $39 million from 4,006 theatres in its fourth weekend, taking its domestic total to $854.9 million.
The film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is now only about $3.4 million short of overtaking Avengers: Endgame’s $858.3 million domestic total to become the second-highest-grossing film in North American box office history.
However, Endgame is scheduled for a September reissue, which could alter the ranking.
The Spider-Man sequel also continued to benefit from strong momentum internationally, although Avengers: Endgameremains Holland’s highest-grossing film worldwide with $2.7 billion.
Meanwhile, Sony’s Insidious: Out of the Further opened with $25.3 million at 3,303 locations, exceeding expectations that had placed its debut between $23 million and $27 million.
The horror film, directed and written by Jacob Chase, follows Gemma, a young mother who discovers she can enter a supernatural realm known as The Further and bring entities from it into the real world.
The latest instalment had opened with $3 million in Thursday previews, below the $5 million recorded by its predecessor, Insidious: The Red Door, which went on to post a $33 million opening weekend in July 2023.
Out of the Further received a C+ CinemaScore, matching The Red Door. The strongest audience grades in the franchise belong to Insidious 2 and Insidious 3, which both received B+ ratings.
Women accounted for 57 per cent of the opening audience for Insidious: Out of the Further, compared with 43 per cent men. Women under 25 recorded the strongest definite-recommendation score at 62 per cent.
The film performed particularly well in the South Central and Western regions, which accounted for 46 per cent of its weekend gross.
The strong opening also came amid significant online interest. According to RelishMix, the film had a social media universe of 282.2 million across TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube before its release, well above the 182 million recorded by The Insidious: Red Door ahead of its 2023 debut.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey remained in third place, adding $19.5 million in its sixth weekend from 3,091 theatres.
The film, which fell 17 per cent, brought its domestic total to $539 million and its worldwide haul to more than $1.44 billion.
The Odyssey has now surpassed The Dark Knight to become Nolan’s highest-grossing film domestically and has also overtaken Deadpool & Wolverine as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
The film’s IMAX performance remained particularly strong, generating about $10 million during the weekend and pushing its domestic IMAX total to $180.7 million, the biggest in the format’s history.
Paw Patrol: Dino Movie ranked fourth with $9.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $35.4 million, while The End of Oak Street took fifth place with $9 million for a $38 million cumulative haul.
Jason Statham’s Mutiny opened in sixth place with $7.5 million from 2,703 theatres.
The Lionsgate action film, directed by Jean-François Richet, received a B+ CinemaScore and performed ahead of Statham’s Shelter, which opened to $5.5 million in January.
Despite concerns that an online leak could hurt its theatrical performance, industry sources said the leak appeared to have had little impact, noting that the film had already been tracking toward a high-single-digit opening.
The weekend also saw strong performances from Tony, which expanded to 1,642 theatres and grossed $5 million, while the re-release of Fast and Furious earned $3.1 million.
Spa Weekend opened with $3.05 million from 2,009 theatres, while Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma grossed $1.93 million.
Overall, the domestic box office generated an estimated $134.2 million for the weekend, marking another $100 million-plus frame in 2026.
The weekend total was about 71 per cent higher than the same period last year, when Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters – Sing-Along led the box office with $19.2 million.
Domestic box office revenue for 2026 has now surpassed $7 billion through August 23, representing a 20 per cent increase over the same period last year and only about seven per cent below the comparable period in 2019.
Summer box office revenue has reached approximately $4.4 billion, up 26 per cent from last summer and six per cent ahead of the comparable 2019 period.
