‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Opens To $32.5M As Sequel Leads Box Office

The Devil Wears Prada 2 opens to $32.5 million as sequel tops box office and projects strong weekend earnings.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ has opened to $32.5 million on its first day in North America, taking the lead at the box office.

The film is showing across 4,150 theatres and is tracking towards an opening weekend between $75 million and $80 million, with some estimates placing it closer to $90 million.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Andrea. Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us.”

The sequel reunites original director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna with returning cast members Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

The story follows Andy Sachs, played by Hathaway, as she returns to the fashion world and reconnects with Miranda Priestly at Runway magazine.

The original 2006 film opened to $27.5 million and finished its global run with $125 million domestically.

Last week’s box office leader “Michael” dropped to second place with $14.4 million on its second Friday, and is projected to reach $51 million by Sunday.

The musical biopic is tracking a 48% fall from its previous weekend and is moving towards a domestic total of about $180 million.

Animated release “Animal Farm” opened in sixth place with $1.1 million from 1,130 cinemas, directed by Andy Serkis and featuring a large voice cast including Jim Parsons, Seth Rogen and Glenn Close.

“The Super Mario Galaxy” movie placed third with $2.7 million on Friday and is projected to reach $402 million domestically over five weekends.

Horror film “Hokum” opened in fourth place with $2.6 million, while “Project Hail Mary” took fifth with $2.2 million and is heading towards $318 million domestically.
