Seun Kuti Arrested Over Assault Of Police Officer

The call for the singer’s arrest was made after a widely circulated video showed him slapping a police officer during a heated disagreement.

Seun Kuti, a Nigerian musician, has turned himself in to help with the investigation hours after a video of him assaulting an officer of the Nigerian Police Force made its rounds.

On Monday, the Public Relations Officer of the NPF, Benjamin Hundeyin, took to his twitter page to report that Kuti had turned himself in and he had been placed under arrest. The tweet read, “Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest in line with the law. The Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved.”

Seun was seen arguing angrily with the cop who was standing in the middle of a busy road in a viral video, whom he hit during the argument. Reactions to the development have been conflicted both online and offline.

After the video went viral, Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), promptly ordered Seun’s arrest. The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement, “The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly. IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.”

Kuti then went to see Idowu Owohunwa, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, on Monday, keeping his promise to assist the police in their investigation of the incident.
