The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has questioned the continued insecurity in Nigeria, arguing that modern technology should enable the government to locate people and respond effectively to criminal activities.
Obi made the statement during an exclusive interview on Arise News on Thursday while responding to questions on how his administration would handle kidnappings and ransom demands.
“In today’s world, you can know where people are.”
Obi questioned the government’s use of surveillance capabilities, arguing that resources deployed to monitor political opponents should instead be directed towards locating and confronting criminals.
“Today, the government knows where I am. All those equipments they’re using to focus on opponents. Should we focus on criminals?”
He said his administration would not be preoccupied with political opponents but would instead direct attention towards criminal activities.
“I’m not going to follow any opponents. I don’t care where they are. I don’t care what they do. It’s not my business. I’m going to focus it where it is.”
Obi said the persistence of kidnappings despite available technology indicated that something was fundamentally wrong with the country’s security response.
“I don’t know who, but there’s something wrong. Not in today’s world. Because we’re serious. It’s happening to everybody. It’s happening every day. So, there’s something wrong.
