Norway’s King Harald is in a “very serious” health condition after his health deteriorated while receiving treatment in hospital, the royal court says.
The 89-year-old monarch was admitted to Oslo University Hospital on 17 August after developing a bacterial infection in his blood.
Harald, Europe’s oldest living monarch, has served as Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991.
The royal court said on Thursday that the king’s condition had worsened but gave no further details about his current treatment.
Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja have cancelled all their planned engagements, according to the palace.
Members of the royal family, including Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja, were reportedly seen arriving at Oslo University Hospital, where the king remains under medical care.
Harald has faced recurring health problems in recent years and has reduced his public duties because of his age.
In 2024, he announced plans to scale back his official activities but rejected any suggestion that he would abdicate.
The king said at the time that his oath of office was for life, signalling his intention to remain on the throne.
Harald became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. He has since remained a largely ceremonial figurehead while Norway operates as a constitutional monarchy.
