Niger Junta Digs In, Forms New Government

Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Zeine will lead the “transitional” government, alongside generals from the military government council.

Two weeks after the overthrow of Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum, in a military coup, the Niger military Junta has formed a new government.

The junta, who broadcast the decree on national television on Thursday, appointed 21 new ministers, with Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine leading the government. Generals from the new military ruling council will help the ministries of defence and interior.

The announcement comes as Niger coup forces accused French hosts of releasing captured terrorists and violating the country’s ban in an attempt to destabilize the country.

The leaders of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) will be holding a meeting on Thursday in Abuja, Nigeria, to discuss further actions to take against the Nigerien Junta.
