Fouzi Lekjaa, president of Morocco’s Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and the country’s budget minister, has joined the Authenticity and Modernity Party, fuelling speculation that he could be positioning himself for the prime minister’s office.
The Hespress news website reported that Lekjaa joined the major political party ahead of September elections, citing what it described as informed sources.
According to the publication, Lekjaa plans to contest as a candidate in his hometown of Berkane, a city in northeastern Morocco.
The move has intensified speculation among Morocco’s political elite, who have reportedly been considering Lekjaa as a potential candidate for prime minister.
In Moroccan politics, joining a political party is widely viewed as a significant step for anyone seeking elected office, making Lekjaa’s decision particularly notable.
