Mali’s transitional government has announced 27 February 2022 as the date for the country’s legislative and presidential elections.
The West African country is expected to return to democracy after last year’s military coup that ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.
The election process will begin with a referendum on 31 October this year then council elections on 26 December.
The second round of legislative and presidential elections will be held in March 2022 if no candidate gets over 50% in the first round.
The international community had urged for a return to democracy after last year’s coup.
The military junta behind the coup was dissolved in January 2021 but senior military personnel still hold several key posts in a 25-member transitional government.
