Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has called for elections in Venezuela by July next year, saying preparations could be completed within the timeframe, the Financial Times reports.
Speaking in an interview with the newspaper on Friday, Machado said there was sufficient time to organise the vote by July.
She also called for transparency in the management of proceeds from Venezuela’s oil sales, which are currently under Washington’s oversight.
Machado said the United States government and the Venezuelan people shared the view that establishing a stable democracy was essential to achieving lasting progress in the country.
“The US government and Venezuelans agree that achieving lasting success requires transforming Venezuela into a stable democracy,” she told the Financial Times.
Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025, has continued to advocate a democratic transition in Venezuela, stressing the need for elections and transparent management of the country’s oil revenues.
