A strike by French air traffic controllers has led to the cancellation of more than 1,500 flights across July 3 and 4, severely disrupting holiday travel plans for nearly 300,000 passengers across Europe.
The walkout, which coincides with the Grand Départ—one of the busiest periods for summer travel in Europe—has sparked widespread frustration among airlines and travellers alike.
In a statement released on Thursday, Airlines for Europe (A4E), a leading industry lobby group, condemned the industrial action, saying, “Airlines for Europe (A4E) strongly condemns the French air traffic control (ATC) strike taking place today and tomorrow. “Tens of thousands of travellers in France and across Europe have seen their summer getaway grounded as French air-traffic controllers walk out during the Grand Départ; one of the busiest periods for summer travel.”
The strike has affected air traffic not only within France but also in surrounding countries, as French airspace is a key transit corridor for flights across the continent.
A4E called for urgent measures to prevent such strikes from paralysing Europe’s aviation network, especially during peak travel seasons. As of now, there is no indication of when the dispute will be resolved or how long the disruptions may continue.
