Donald Duke, presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), has promised to reduce the price of petrol to about N300 per litre if elected president in 2027.
Duke, a former governor of Cross River State, made the promise during an interview on Wednesday.
Asked what the price of petrol would be under his administration, Duke said, “I’ll try and bring it to about N300.”
He said his proposed reduction was based on an approach that would involve allocating 600,000 barrels of crude oil for domestic consumption while selling the remaining one million barrels.
“I’ve told you, it sounds so outlandish, but I’ve given you the arithmetic,” Duke said.
“Allocate 600,000 barrels, if that’s what you consume daily. Allocate that to yourself. The other one million, you can sell.”
Duke’s position comes amid continued criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the petrol subsidy in 2023, a policy that triggered an immediate increase in the cost of living and contributed to higher prices of goods and services.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, said in August that he would restore the petrol subsidy if elected in 2027.
Atiku said the government had failed to account for funds saved from the subsidy removal, arguing that the policy could have been justified if the savings had been channelled into development projects.
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), also said in September that he would restore the petrol subsidy after tackling corruption.
Obi had previously supported the subsidy removal but said at the Nigeria Bar Association 2026 conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, that the mismanagement of the gains from the policy by the current administration was not sufficient reason to reinstate it.
