China has dismissed two senior generals, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, from the State Central Military Commission following investigations into suspected serious violations of discipline and law.
State-run Xinhua news agency reported on Friday that the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress approved the removal of the two officers from their positions.
Zhang, who served as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, was one of China’s most senior military figures and a member of the ruling Communist Party’s powerful Politburo.
Liu was also a member of the commission and previously served as chief of staff of its Joint Staff Department, a key body within China’s military command structure.
Chinese authorities announced investigations into the two generals in January, intensifying scrutiny of the country’s senior military leadership.
China has separate Central Military Commission structures under the state and the ruling Communist Party. Friday’s decision specifically concerns Zhang and Liu’s positions in the state commission.
