US Adults Support Border Security Measures but Mostly Oppose Arrests in Schools and Churches, AP-NORC Poll Reveals

A new AP-NORC poll has showed US adults support border security but oppose arrests in schools and churches.

A new poll indicates that many US adults support strengthening security at the southern border and pursuing targeted deportations, but President Donald Trump’s more expansive immigration actions may push the country beyond the limited consensus currently in place.

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that half of US adults believe increasing border security should be a top priority, while 30% consider it a moderate priority. Only 20% view it as a low priority.

The poll also revealed that the majority of Americans support deporting immigrants convicted of violent crimes, which aligns with Trump’s deportation plans.

However, his initial executive orders go beyond this, with proposals to keep asylum-seekers in Mexico and end automatic citizenship for children born in the US.

While 40% of US adults support deporting all immigrants living in the country illegally, a similar percentage opposes such measures.

Most Americans also believe local police should cooperate with federal immigration authorities on deportations, though the implementation of such policies may face backlash.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration reversed previous policies limiting arrests in sensitive locations like schools and churches, despite the likelihood that such actions would be widely unpopular.
