Undav Late Brace Sends Germany Through With Comeback Win Over Ivory Coast

Deniz Undav’s brace helps Germany overturn a deficit to secure World Cup knockout qualification.

Germany secured their place in the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2014 after coming from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in a dramatic Group E clash on Saturday.

Substitute Deniz Undav was the hero for Julian Nagelsmann’s side, scoring twice in the final 22 minutes to overturn Franck Kessie’s first-half opener and maintain Germany’s perfect start to the tournament with six points from two matches.

Ivory Coast had taken the lead before the break when Kessie converted a rebound after Amad Diallo’s effort, completing a swift attacking move initiated by Yan Diomande. Germany, however, remained composed despite seeing two first-half goals ruled out and continued to press for a breakthrough.

Undav equalised in the 68th minute with a controlled volley before completing the comeback deep into stoppage time, turning sharply inside the area and firing beyond goalkeeper, Yahia Fofana.

The victory sends Germany through to the last 32 as Group E leaders, while Ivory Coast remain on three points and must now beat Curacao in their final group match to boost their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

Germany will conclude the group stage against Ecuador in New Jersey, while Ivory Coast face Curacao in Philadelphia.
