US President Donald Trump has described his high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing as “great” after nearly two hours of talks between both leaders.
Trump, however, did not disclose whether discussions covered Taiwan, the self-governed island claimed by Beijing that remains a major source of tension between the two countries.
Shortly after talks began, Chinese state media published remarks from Xi warning of possible “conflict” with the US over Taiwan. The issue adds to existing disputes over tariffs, technology competition and the Iran war.
China staged an elaborate reception for Trump during the visit, including a gun salute, cheering children and a tour of the historic 15th Century Temple of Heaven alongside Xi.
The visit is being seen as a major diplomatic gesture by Beijing, where ceremonial displays often carry political significance beyond symbolism.
Trump is also accompanied in Beijing by several leading US technology executives, including Elon Musk of Tesla and Jensen Huang of Nvidia.
