Tinubu Blames Poor Long-Term Planning For Nigeria’s Development Challenges

President Tinubu says lack of long-term planning hindered Nigeria’s growth, pledges stronger collaboration with Enugu State government.

President Bola Tinubu has attributed Nigeria’s underdevelopment and slow growth to the failure of past administrations to adopt a robust long-term planning framework, particularly in financing critical infrastructure.

Speaking at the State House in Abuja while receiving a delegation of Enugu State stakeholders led by Governor Peter Mbah, the President said previous governments relied on short-term funding to execute long-term projects, a mismatch that undermined sustainable development.

“What has been the problem in the past is Nigeria trying to finance long-term projects with short-term funding. We have not embarked upon serious long-term outlook for our country,” Tinubu said.

He, however, expressed optimism that with committed and visionary leadership at subnational levels, Nigeria is now on the right path toward becoming a leading nation in Africa.

The President commended state governors for effectively utilising resources released to sub-nationals, noting improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and overall welfare. He added that the political realignment toward the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) reflects the impact of ongoing economic reforms.

Tinubu praised Governor Mbah’s leadership in Enugu State, highlighting progress in security, infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

“You have been a transformative leader, and we genuinely appreciate what is evolving in Enugu today. The results you are outlining are not abstract—they are evidence that reform is working,” he said.

He assured the delegation of continued federal collaboration, particularly in key areas such as railway development, power sector reforms, and infrastructure.

“We will continue to work together, think together, and build together a nation that will be a pride for all our citizens,” the President added.

Tinubu also acknowledged the support expressed by the delegation and reiterated his administration’s commitment to national development.

Earlier, Governor Mbah said the visit was to demonstrate solidarity with the President’s vision and to express appreciation for federal support to the state.

“This visit is symbolic because it speaks to our shared future and commitment to progress. We have come to express our gratitude for your engagement and investment in Enugu State,” Mbah said.

He pledged the state’s support for Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, stating that the relationship between the federal government and Enugu State has earned the trust of its people.

“We will stand proudly with you on election day in January 2027,” he said.

Mbah also highlighted key projects inaugurated during the President’s previous visit to the state, noting their impact on socio-economic development.

Former Senate President Ken Nnamani, who also spoke at the meeting, commended the President for his support to Enugu State and the South-East region, particularly in infrastructure development.

He affirmed that the people of Enugu would support Tinubu’s re-election, citing the benefits of federal interventions in the state.

The delegation included political leaders, traditional rulers, and other prominent figures from Enugu State.
