A 14-year-old boy killed seven people, including his grandparents, in attacks at his home and a school outside Bangkok on Friday before dying, police said.
The attack is Thailand’s deadliest mass killing since 2022.
Police said the teenager first killed his grandparents before going to Debsirin Nonthaburi School, on Bangkok’s northwestern outskirts, where he opened fire.
Seven people, including the suspect, died at the school, while at leat 30 others were injured, according to Lieutenant General Trairong Phophan, spokesman for the National Police.
Students fled the school as ambulances arrived and teachers comforted one another.
Police said the teenager fired at least 26 rounds and was found with 34 additional rounds of ammunition. The firearm belonged to his grandfather.
One 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially mistook the sound of gunfire for firecrackers.
“I didn’t think it was a gun at first,” he said. “There were many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. Then it started again.”
Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong said both teachers and students were among the victims. Police confirmed the attacker was a student at the school.
It was the second shooting at a Thai school this year, following an attack in the country’s south in February in which a teacher was killed and a student was injured.
Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith said his team treated students with injuries to their backs, chests and arms after arriving while the attack was still unfolding.
He said emergency responders later attended to the teenage suspect.
“We rushed up and found that the perpetrator had shot himself in the right side of the head and collapsed. When we got up there, we checked his pulse, he still had one, so we started CPR.”
The teenager was taken to hospital, he said.
District authorities said the school had about 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed sorrow over the attack.
“This is terrible for something like this to happen,” he told reporters. “I’m sad for those who died and sad for something like this to happen in our country.”
Thailand has experienced several deadly shootings in recent years despite tighter gun control measures introduced after previous attacks.
In 2022, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in the country’s deadliest mass killing in recent history.
A gunman killed five people at a Bangkok market in July 2025 before later dying. In 2023, another 14-year-old killed two people and injured five others in a shooting at a luxury shopping centre in Bangkok.
Following the 2023 attack, authorities introduced stricter gun control measures, including a temporary ban on new firearm licences, tighter import restrictions and a ban on people under 20 using shooting ranges.
Longer-term measures also required some gun owners to obtain medical certificates assessing their mental health and introduced validity periods for certain firearm licences.
According to the Small Arms Survey, Thailand had an estimated 10.3 million civilian-owned firearms in 2017, the highest rate of gun ownership in Southeast Asia.
