Argentina fans are leaving nothing to chance ahead of the World Cup semi-final against England, turning to long-standing superstitions they believe will help the defending champions reach another final.
Among the most popular rituals is freezing Harry Kane’s name on a piece of paper, a symbolic act fans say prevents the England captain from influencing the match. The tradition is part of Argentina’s famous cábalas; lucky routines supporters faithfully repeat before every game.
Many fans wear the same jerseys, sit in the same seats and eat the same meals whenever Argentina win, convinced that changing their routine could bring bad luck. “We’re going to freeze Kane because he’s the top scorer,” 13-year-old fan Ines Mutri said, explaining that she and her friends write the names of rival stars before placing them in the freezer.
The superstition has also gone viral on social media, where supporters have shared AI-generated images of England players trapped inside blocks of ice. Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni has admitted he also follows a personal ritual, saying he steps onto the pitch with his right foot first before making the sign of the cross.
The match renews one of football’s fiercest rivalries, dating back to the 1986 World Cup, with many fans hoping their cherished cábalas will once again bring Argentina the luck needed to overcome England and move one step closer to retaining the trophy.
