A former Prime Minister of Sudan, Sadiq al-Mahdi has died from coronavirus three weeks after being hospitalised in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was 84 years old.

A statement from his family and National Umma Party said al-Mahdi was being treated in Sudan before a decision was made to take him abroad.

He was hospitalised after 21 members of his family contracted the virus in early November, but local media reports say the family members are all in a stable condition.

Mahdi was prime minister in 1989 when he was overthrown in a coup led by former President Omar al-Bashir.
