American rapper Remy Ma has released her six-track EP Alimony, featuring “Rem the Pen,” where she references fellow rapper Nicki Minaj.
Released Friday, September 25, the project sees the Bronx-born rapper reflect on relationships among women in hip-hop while addressing aspects of her personal life through her music.
“Rem the Pen” opens the EP and features Ma acknowledging several female rappers, including Cardi B and Lil’ Kim, before turning her attention to Minaj.
“Me and Nicki will probably never speak again, but even that bitch told y’all I got a pen,” she raps.
The reference adds another chapter to the long-running tension between Ma and Minaj, whose relationship has been strained since the late 2000s.
In a statement to Complex about Alimony, Ma said she wanted the project to feel like a conversation among women and allow listeners to connect with its themes.
“I wanted this project to feel like a conversation between women,” she said. “We’ve all had those moments where you call your girls, look at yourself in the mirror, and say, ‘Girl, what are we doing?’ Sometimes you laugh, sometimes you learn, but you keep moving.”
Ma said music has remained a space where she can express herself and that she wanted women to listen to the project, have fun with it and identify with parts of it.
She also reflected on the public attention surrounding her life in recent years, saying she preferred to channel that energy into her music rather than respond to every conversation about her.
“My fans have been with me through every chapter, and I wanted them in the room for this one,” she said.
The release comes as Ma continues to receive public attention over her ongoing divorce from rapper Papoose, with their relationship becoming a subject of discussion.
With Alimony, Ma turns that broader attention back toward her music, using the six-track project to explore personal experiences and conversations among women while continuing her work in hip-hop.
