Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said a peace agreement in Ukraine is unlikely to be reached anytime soon, warning that Russia is expected to continue the war until at least the winter.
Speaking to reporters in Paris on Tuesday, Tusk said he discussed the conflict with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as the broader security situation in Europe.
Tusk said there was little indication that Moscow was prepared to agree to either a ceasefire or a peace settlement, citing what he described as Russia’s uncompromising stance.
He added that Ukraine’s allies expect Russia to intensify its military operations in the coming months, making a near-term resolution to the conflict increasingly unlikely.
The Polish prime minister also announced that Poland will host joint military exercises with French and British troops this autumn to strengthen regional security and prepare allied forces for any future mission following a ceasefire or peace agreement.
He said the exercises would help members of the “coalition of the willing” prepare to provide credible security guarantees for Ukraine while reinforcing stability across the wider region once conditions allow for a lasting peace.
