Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called for the withdrawal of licences held by MTN Nigeria and MultiChoice in response to attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
He spoke during plenary at the National Assembly. The lawmaker, who represents Edo North, raised the issue after reports of fresh violence against foreign nationals, including Nigerians. He said Nigeria should respond through economic action.
Oshiomhole asked the Senate to take a clear position. He said companies linked to South Africa should face measures in Nigeria. He argued that economic steps would send a message.
He said, “I am not going to shed tears. If you hit me, I hit you. I think it is appropriate in democracy. It is an economic struggle.”
The senator also urged Nigerians working with the firms to return home and take up roles locally. He said the country must protect its citizens and not ignore the attacks.
He added, “It is time to reciprocate. This Senate should adopt a position that MTN, a South African company, carting away millions of dollars from Nigeria every day, be nationalised. Its license withdrawn and taken over by a Nigerian company.”
The comments follow reports that some Nigerians in South Africa have asked to return home after the attacks. Nigerian authorities have also opened talks with South African officials.
The Senate has not taken a decision on the proposal. Lawmakers are still considering possible responses.
