Afrobeats star Omah Lay has declared himself the best Nigerian artist of the last 20 years, stating that only Burna Boy comes close to his level.
The singer made the statement during a recent interview with Nandoleaks ahead of the release of his upcoming album Clarity of Mind. Speaking confidently about his place in the industry, he dismissed ongoing comparisons with other artists while asserting his dominance in music artistry.
In his words:
“I don’t want to brag too much, but I am the best at this. When you put the whole Afrobeats artist category…When it comes to art, like making music, I am the best of the last 20 years, maybe the only person that sometimes I put myself with his Burna Boy,”
Omah Lay added that Burna Boy is the only contemporary he considers worthy of comparison, reinforcing his belief in his creative superiority.
The artist’s latest remarks are consistent with his past statements. In 2025, he had also described himself as the greatest of his generation, promising that his forthcoming album would serve as proof of his claim.
During the same interview, he further described Clarity of Mind as the greatest Afrobeats album of all time, highlighting his confidence in the project.
The journey to the album’s release has not been without challenges. In 2024, Omah Lay revealed that he scrapped an earlier version of the project after alleging that a fellow artist used a sound he had shared.
He has since released several singles leading up to the album, including Holyghost in 2024, followed by Waist in 2025 and Don’t Love Me. All tracks are expected to feature on the 12-track album scheduled for release on April 3, 2026.
Speaking on the project, the singer explained that Clarity of Mind reflects personal experiences, touching on aspects of his life such as mental health and relationships. He suggested that, like his debut album Boy Alone, the new project will offer introspection and emotional depth.
Omah Lay maintained that the album represents his most honest work yet, reiterating his belief that it will stand as a defining moment in contemporary Nigerian pop music.
