Following tragic death, sickness and abject poverty in which many of Nigeria creative artistes succumb, the Society for the Advancement of Entertainment and Trust to promote the welfare and long-term security of Nigerian entertainers and other creatives was on Wednesday unveiled in Lagos.
The initiative, promoted by entertainment practitioner Victory Okelezo, popularly known known as Kupa Victory, is aimed at providing sustainable support, particularly in the areas of healthcare and insurance, to reduce the growing reliance on public appeals during medical emergencies.
Speaking at the unveiling in Lagos, Mr. Okelezo said the initiative was inspired by the increasing cases of illness and sudden deaths among entertainers.
According to him, the trust is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the well-being of the entertainment industry by affiliation.
“The Trust exists to assist and showcase support to vulnerable members of the entertainment industry who face life-threatening and high-cost medical conditions.”
He said the trust would engage government, corporate organisations and individuals to raise funds and establish a support system that would preserve the dignity of creatives.
He stressed that “the mission of the Trust is to provide financial assistance, medical support, advocacy and compassionate care to seriously ill artists – mobilising partnership and resources that safeguard their well-being, preserve their dignity, and celebrate their lasting contribution to society.”
Also speaking, Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, described the initiative as timely, saying successful entertainers should not be left to depend on public donations after contributing significantly to society.
Mr. Falana advocated greater awareness and access to insurance, stressing that entertainers should be encouraged to secure their future through sustainable social protection schemes.
He said the initiative could become a model for other African countries if successfully implemented.
Intimated as members of the Board of Trustees at the event are veteran actress Patience Ozokwo, who represents the Actors Guild of Nigeria, representative of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, Mr Fidelis Duker, actor Sani Danja and Bayo Adegbe, representing the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria. Mr. Femi Falana was inaugurated as the Protector of the Trust.
The organisers say the initiative, under the theme “Life After the Art,” seeks to ensure that Nigerian creatives can enjoy dignity, security and support beyond their active years in the entertainment industry.
