Nigerian Air Force Investigates Alleged Civilian Casualties in Zamfara Airstrikes

NAF has dispatched a fact-finding team to Zamfara, pledging transparency, professionalism amid reports of accidental civilian casualties in an airstrike

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dispatched a fact-finding team to Zamfara State to investigate reports of alleged civilian casualties following military airstrikes in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area, over the weekend.

In a statement by Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Hasan Abubakar, established the team to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the situation.

The team, led by Edward Gabkwet, Director of Coordination and Cooperation in NAF’s civil-military relations branch, is tasked with gathering essential information by engaging local and state officials and other stakeholders.

The investigation follows allegations that more than 16 civilians and vigilantes were mistakenly bombed during the operation. The air chief expressed regret over the incident, affirming NAF’s commitment to professionalism and adherence to global standards.

“Our absolute value for the life and well-being of every Nigerian remains an integral part of the ethos of the service,” Abubakar stated, adding that maintaining public trust is essential for operational success.

He assured the public that the NAF would refine its operational procedures to safeguard civilians and critical infrastructure while achieving mission objectives.

Abubakar urged stakeholders to remain patient and trust the investigative process, reiterating the air force’s dedication to ensuring peace, security, and prosperity across the nation.

This development comes as NAF continues its broader efforts to counter threats to national security in northern Nigeria while balancing operational effectiveness with the need to protect civilian lives.
