Lionel Messi has come under criticism after attempting to have Spain defender Marc Cucurella sent off during the FIFA World Cup final against Argentina.
Argentina were reduced to 10 men in the second half after Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card for a challenge on Pau Cubarsi. As Spain players protested the decision, Cucurella approached Messi to discuss the incident before briefly covering his mouth.
Under FIFA regulations introduced for the tournament, deliberately covering the mouth while communicating with another player or official can result in a red card. Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron became the first player dismissed under the rule during the group stage.
Messi immediately drew referee Slavko Vincic’s attention to Cucurella’s gesture, but the official took no action.
ITV commentator Lee Dixon criticised the incident, saying: “The game has gone if you’re getting bookings and red cards for that, to get somebody sent off. You shouldn’t be such a baby to try and get someone sent off for that, it’s ridiculous.”
The incident also drew reactions from supporters on social media. One user wrote: “Like a child running to tell teacher. Pathetic behaviour from the so-called superstar.” Another described it as the “most pathetic moment” of the final.
Messi’s appeal was unsuccessful, with Cucurella remaining on the pitch as Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina through Ferran Torres’ late winner.
