France cemented their status as one of the favourites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title with a dominant 3-0 victory over Sweden to secure their place in the Round of 16.
Didier Deschamps’ side controlled proceedings from the outset at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, but had to wait until just before the break for the breakthrough as captain Kylian Mbappe curled home a superb effort to give Les Bleus a deserved lead heading into half time.
France maintained their momentum after the restart and doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Bradley Barcola finished off another slick attacking move to put the result beyond Sweden’s reach.
Mbappe then completed his brace later in the second half after latching onto an exquisite pass from Olise to score France’s third goal of the evening and put the finishing touches on an accomplished display.
Sweden created a handful of opportunities through Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak but struggled to cope with France’s relentless attacking pressure and disciplined defensive organisation.
The victory sends France into the Round of 16, where they will face surprise package Paraguay after the South Americans stunned Germany on penalties in the previous round.
France’s impressive performance also extended their perfect record in the tournament and reinforced their credentials as serious contenders for the trophy.
