Efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s indigenous research, engineering and technological capabilities received a major boost Thursday, as the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) broke ground for the NLNG Research and Innovation Centre for Computer and Electrical Engineering (RICCEE) at Rivers State University.
The project, described as NLNG’s largest Human Capital Development Institutional Strengthening initiative to date, is designed to expand the university’s capacity for advanced, industry-relevant research, specialised training and the development of technological solutions for Nigeria’s energy and industrial sectors.
A key component of the project is the establishment of a professorial chair and a fully operational research and development centre to drive industry-focused research and develop solutions to critical operational challenges, particularly those confronting NLNG.
Successful research outcomes from the centre are also expected to have commercialisation potential, creating opportunities for wider industrial application.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony at the Rivers State University, Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor, NLNG’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Adeleye Falade, described the project as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future and a demonstration of the company’s commitment to sustainable human capital development.
Falade, represented by NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Sophia Horsfall, said the centre would enhance the university’s ability to produce highly skilled professionals while undertaking research that responds directly to industry requirements.
He said RICCEE would further bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical industry needs by enabling researchers and industry professionals to collaborate on innovations with commercial and developmental value.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Mr Felix Ogbe, represented by the Director, Capacity Building, Abayomi Bamidele, described the groundbreaking as a significant milestone in the implementation of the Board’s Human Capital Development objectives.
According to him, the project is part of NCDMB’s Human Capital Development Institutional Strengthening Programme, which seeks to establish enduring partnerships with higher institutions through infrastructure capable of improving teaching, research, innovation and practical skills development.
Ogbe challenged the centre to evolve into a hub of discovery, creativity, enterprise and technological advancement, where students can innovate, researchers can develop solutions to real-world problems, and industry can find reliable research and development partners.
He commended NLNG for its commitment to the project and praised the Governing Council, Vice-Chancellor and management of Rivers State University for their dedication to academic excellence.
The Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, said the university’s 2026–2030 strategic development plan prioritised stronger academic programmes, research collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship.
He said RICCEE would provide a critical platform for achieving these objectives, envisioning the centre as a world-class hub where researchers and students could develop practical solutions to engineering and technological challenges and transform innovative ideas into products, technologies and services.
The centre will occupy approximately 9,336 square metres within the university and feature specialised laboratories for Electronics and Signal Processing, Robotics and Embedded Systems, Software Engineering, and Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity.
The facility will also incorporate sustainability features, including solar energy provision and energy-efficient lighting, designed to reduce operating costs and support reliable research activities.
RICCEE is one of the Institutional Strengthening Projects being implemented under NCDMB’s Human Capital Development Programme, which seeks to improve institutions of learning through modern infrastructure, research facilities, technical equipment and industry-aligned training.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Rivers State University’s contribution to indigenous innovation while deepening collaboration between academia and industry in developing solutions to Nigeria’s industrial and energy priorities.
