King Charles begins US visit, urges unity on democracy, calls for renewed UK-US alliance amid global tensions and security concerns.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have arrived in the United States for a four-day state visit, where the King is set to call for unity in defending democratic values.

Security across Washington remains tight after a shooting at an event attended by the president days earlier.

King Charles is scheduled to address the US Congress on Tuesday. His speech is expected to focus on unity and shared democratic principles.

He is set to tell lawmakers that in times of global strain, nations must stand together to defend core values.

“Time and again, our two countries have always found ways to come together.”

He will also call for stronger ties between both countries.

“Reconciliation and renewal” of the US and UK partnership.

The King is expected to stress support for alliances and shared global responsibilities, including NATO and Ukraine.

The transatlantic alliance is built on a “generosity of spirit and a duty to foster compassion, to promote peace, to deepen mutual understanding and to value people of all faiths and none”.

The visit includes a ceremonial welcome, meetings at the White House and a state dinner.

At the UK embassy in Washington, the King and Queen attended a garden party with over 600 guests, including political leaders and diplomats.

Among those present were Nancy Pelosi, Ted Cruz and Yvette Cooper.

Queen Camilla also met campaigners working on domestic abuse issues.

The visit comes as both countries mark 250 years since American independence, with officials aiming to strengthen ties through diplomacy and public engagement.
