The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested several suspects in connection with separate cases of alleged culpable homicide and the violent unrest that rocked Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area, while also recovering six cattle abandoned during the disturbances.
The Command said the arrests underscored its sustained efforts to restore public order and ensure those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.
In the latest incident, police said a 20-year-old suspect, Saminu Ibrahim of Gidan Gona Village in Ringim Local Government Area, was arrested over the alleged killing of another 20-year-old during a violent altercation at Dabigel Village on Monday.
According to the Command, the dispute escalated when the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim in the chest with a sharp metal object locally known as Danbuda. The victim was rushed to hospital but was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment.
Police said the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue before the matter is transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further investigation and subsequent prosecution.
In a separate development, the Command disclosed that it had arrested two suspects over the violent disturbances that erupted at Gujungu Market on July 26 following an altercation between a soldier and a 25-year-old trader, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim of Miga Local Government Area.
Police said the soldier allegedly stabbed the victim during the confrontation, resulting in injuries from which he later died.
The incident reportedly triggered widespread violence as hoodlums attacked a police station, fired bows and arrows at security personnel and set two thatched shops ablaze within the market.
Following intelligence-led operations, police arrested Muhammed Muhammed, 22, of Gagarawa Local Government Area, and Faridu Mohammed for their alleged roles in the attack, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.
The Command further disclosed that six additional suspects were arrested on August 2 over the alleged attack on two vigilante members during the same crisis.
According to police, the victims were assaulted with sticks and cutlasses, leaving one dead while the other is receiving treatment at a medical facility.
Those arrested are Isiyaku Abdulkarim, 55; Yahaya Habu, 31; Ibrahim Abubakar, 30; Audu Mamman Janare, 30; Ya’u Duga, 65; and Mamman Musa, 20, from Taura, Gagarawa, Kaugama and Jahun local government areas.
Police also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the unrest, adding that investigations were continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the violence and identify other suspects.
Meanwhile, the Command said a broad-based stakeholders’ engagement involving Miyetti Allah leaders, traditional and religious leaders, community representatives, youth groups and security agencies was underway to address the underlying causes of the Gujungu Market crisis and prevent a recurrence.
The Commissioner of Police commended officers and other security agencies for their swift response in containing the disturbances, assuring residents that the Command would remain resolute in protecting lives and property.
He urged members of the public to remain peaceful, law-abiding and continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing investigations and strengthen security across the state.
