Former Benue State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Alex Ter Adun, has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would restore state control over insecurity by demonstrating the political will required to confront Nigeria’s security challenges.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Sunday,Ter Adun, a member of the Atiku campaign team, defended Atiku’s pledge to end insecurity within his first year in office.
He said the current security situation was linked to what he described as a lack of political will by the incumbent government to confront the challenge.
“I remind you of the famous quote of the late General Sani Abacha. He said, any security breach in the Federation or in a country that lasts more than 24 hours, the incumbent government is complicit.
“And that’s exactly what has happened to Nigeria to date.”
According to him, Atiku’s approach to insecurity would begin with providing decisive leadership from the highest level of government.
“So for Atiku, his understanding of the current security challenges is to the extent that the incumbent government lacks the political will to be able to address the scourge.
“So the first thing he would do is to lead with the political will to be able to address this challenge. And once the commander-in-chief shows the political will, he is showing his troops the direction.”
Ter Adun said Atiku’s security plan was premised on ensuring that the Nigerian state maintains superiority over armed groups and other renegade elements.
“If you look at the security plan, Atiku’s security plan emphasises one thing, that no country in the world allows the balance of terror in favour of renegade elements in any particular territory.
“So the balance of terror should always be in favour of the state, not the renegade elements on the street.
“Atiku feels that when he becomes the president of Nigeria, he’ll be able to do that.”
